Updated XO software: “180py”

Bernie Innocenti and the team in Paraguay have released build 180py of their Fedora 11 + Sugar desktop. It is fast, offers both Sugar and Gnome desktops, and includes many recent features from the past year into a build that isn’t too large.

Some call it ‘the best XO OS ever’ – and it is indeed fantastic. Everyone who has an XO-1 should download this build and try it out. (but don’t forget to back up your files and any customized activities first!)

At the same time, Sugar 0.88 is being designed to work on both the XO-1 and the XO-1.5, and is currently available for testing and development. Bernie needs help with finding “a more pronounceable name than F11-0.88″ – describing the combination of Sugar 0.88 and stock Fedora 11 – so once more, please share any good naming conventions. If your name is chosen, I will personally ship you one of the near-mythical Red XOs.

  1. Following advice from one of the support gang members on irc, I backed up my laptop (from the ok prompt) with copy-nand u:\yourbackupimagname.img. And updated to OS284py.img. Alll I can say is WOW! Thanks a lot to all that made these new F11 releases happen! Thank you, Thank you! And to all does that are still considering whter to take a try: just do it, I’m certain you will not regrett.

  2. I suggest ‘Spartan Sugar’.

    Fedora 11 is codename Leonidas.

    Leonidas was a Spartan.

Sweet Jesus I hope I get an XO.

  3. I just had an odd name idea:
    “Paraguayan Piano ”
it’s from Paraguay and a Piano has 88 keys (0.88).
    or
    “Piri Piano”
    Piri being a Paraguayan hat.

  4. I am just testing the Paraguayan image on a XO 1.5 and from a SD Card, so I can switch easily to the os203 build.
The Paraguay Educa people have managed a great work. With their vecinos in Uruguay and soon the “La Rioja” deployment in Argentina, we should experiment a very inspiring revival of the once mythical “Cono Sur”! They proved that the Sur is able to inspire the rest of the world, combining pedagogical inspiration and well organized engineering.

As for the naming of this well done development, I suggest “Sylphide”, considering the aerial nature of the “Sylph” ( http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/sylph) personalized by the Sugar platform, pared with the engineering masterwork of Fedora (suggested by the scientifically sounding -phide” suffix). So, the conjunction of those qualities should concretize in the “Sylphide” ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sylphide ), named after 2 homonym choregraphical masterpieces from the 19th century (“La Sylphide” & “Les Sylphides”).
